Introduction

Listed on TSX-V (MAT), Matamec is a Canadian mining exploration company which explores for precious and strategic metals. The Company’s two primary properties are its Zeus property in Quebec for REE-yttrium and zirconium and its Matheson JV with Goldcorp in Ontario for gold. As regards to REEs, Matamec explores the Zeus Property which includes the near surface Kipawa deposit (a 43-101 resource calculation for REE-Y and Zr is offered on SEDAR dated June 3rd, 2010), but also several other zones and showings. The Kipawa deposit is promising because it could yield heavy REE-Y of which experts say the world supply will become scarce in 2014 because of limited production in China, especially yttrium, terbium and dysprosium. Rare earths, yttrium and zirconium are often present in green technologies like wind and solar power, as well as solid oxide fuel cells. According to experts in the field, the attributes of REEs are so unique that it is difficult to replace them, if not impossible. The exploitation of the heavy REEs and zirconium is usually not very environmentally-friendly, but the size of the Kipawa deposit would allow for a much greener approach for these commodities.
